• What do I need to legally drive a boat in Alberta?

  If you are driving a boat in a public body of water (not private property) you will need all of the following: 

  • A pleasure craft operator card (boat license)
  • Boat insurance 
  • Necessary safety equipment

  While it is not mandatory to register your boat, it is recommended to register your watercraft at your local registry office. 

• How much does it cost to insure a boat?

  Like most things in insurance, there usually isn't an exact answer to "how much does it cost to insure". Depending on your own risk profile, the coverage you need, and the value of your boat, your premium can vary quite substantially.

  For older boats with the standard $2 million in liability coverage, you're likely to spend between $150-$400 a year.

  If you have a newer boat with all perils coverage, you can expect to spend $800-$2,000 annually.

• Are my boat accessories covered through my boat insurance?

  On a basic boat insurance policy, accessories are generally not covered. However, you can name accessories on your insurance policy and have them protected as well. Accessories such as:

  • Other boating accessories
